What is a Komainu?
When we visit a shrine, we are greeted by a ``komainu'' (guardian dog). Guardian dogs are statues
that are placed in pairs in front of worship halls and at key points along the approach to the shrine.
The guardian dog standing still with a brave expression has the meaning of exorcising evil spirits and protecting the shrine.
Its appearance is more like a lion with a magnificent mane than a dog.
To be precise, guardian dogs are considered to be imaginary animals and spiritual animals.
