The Aomori Nebuta Festival is said to be a variation of the lantern floating of the Tanabata Festival, but its origins are uncertain.
The Tanabata Festival, which was introduced from China during the Nara period (710-794), was combined with the ancient customs and rituals of Tsugaru, such as sending off spirits, dolls, and insects, and it is believed that as paper, bamboo, and candles became widespread, lanterns were created, which then evolved into dolls and fan nebuta.
The earliest form of nebuta was probably the Tanabata Festival. The main item that appeared in the festival was a lantern called nebuta, and the Tanabata Festival is held on the night of July 7th, when impurities are washed away into the river or sea, and lanterns are floated down the river as a purification ritual, and prayers are made for good health. This is called "Nebuta Nagashi" and is reflected in the current Aomori Nebuta float parade on the sea.
The name "Nebuta (Neputa/Nefuta)" is thought to be a corruption of "nemuri nagashi" (sleep) into "nebuta" based on the distribution of folk vocabulary and dialectology in the Tohoku region, the Shinetsu region "nemburi nagashi," the Kanto region "nebuchi nagashi/neboke nagashi/nemutta nagashi," and other areas.
