| Oni masks are extremely old; since ancient times, various ethnic groups
have feared and worshipped hidden beings beyond human comprehension as
demons. There are demons that drive away evil spirits, demons that are
driven away, and demons that also have a divine aspect. It is believed
that the oni mask is the oldest and most numerous type of mask in the aforementioned
regional traditions. Like demon god masks, most are thought to have been
used for admonishing humans, warding off evil, and exorcising evil spirits.
Ondeko is a traditional performing art that has been passed down in Sado
for centuries, and is called "Ondeko" on the island. While there are various masks and dance styles, the
purpose remains the same: a bountiful harvest, family safety, good health,
and protection from evil spirits. There is also the Gojinjyo Taiko, which is said to have been used to receive divine power and achieve victory
against the Uesugi forces. |
