| Since ancient times, it has been believed that there are gods who spread
epidemics among humans, and they are called "Ekki (demon of epidemic)".
Oinari is also called "Oni-yarai" as a ritual to drive away the plague god, and is a New Year's Eve event to welcome the new year. The role of driving away evil spirits during Oinari is to wear a golden four-eyed mask, a black robe and a red skirt, and carry a spear and a shield, and drive away the demon. Setsubun festivals are held all over Japan. Hosoushi, who drives away demons, wear a golden four-eyed mask, red and black clothes, and follow many children as they walk around chasing demons. Hosoushi is a barrier divided into four sides, and originates from the theory of directional protection and the theory of Yin-Yang and the five elements. In other words, the role of driving away the disasters of Hoso is also called "Hosoushi". The truth is unclear, but one theory is that a pregnant woman and her fetus have four eyes, and it was believed that they had the property of evil eye (staring to ward off evil). Another theory is that in China, the Hoso-shi sometimes led funeral processions, and so he got four eyes to ward off demons at the four corners of the grave. Sometimes, Ming-ki (vessel placed in the grave with the deceased) with a picture of the Hoso-shi is placed at the four corners of the grave. |
